Do not give “dog snacks.” A good diet is 1/4-pound ground round or other lean beef, 2 cups cooked white rice without salt, add a tablespoon vegetable oil, and one tablet of Pet-Cal supplement.

Unless severe accompanying kidney disease is present, a protein-restricted diet is not recommended for dietary management of heart failure. A high quality diet with at least 25-30% (dogs) and 40-50% (cats) meat-based protein (on dry matter basis) is recommended.
