The Lurcher is an independent thinker but intelligent and highly trainable. He can learn the basics of good dog behavior, plus much more, if you use positive reinforcement techniques, particularly food rewards.


Are Lurchers obedient?

Lurchers respond well to commands. They just don't always obey them! When I first acquired my lurcher two months ago, I was fully aware of the common conception that lurchers don't 'do' obedience commands. Because of this, I was determined to teach my boy a basic 'sit'.

Are Lurchers hard work?

As a general rule lurchers as pets are great . They do need more exercise than the greyhounds and are not so good at being left. If you work you will need to have other dogs or doggie day care solutions. They also need a fully secure garden – so 6 foot fences to keep the dog safe.
