Any Q

Long Coats Long Coated Malamutes, sometimes referred to as “Woollies” are those that are born with long and soft coat. These dogs have a soft undercoat and a soft guard coat, neither of which are weatherproof. The length of the coat may vary, but the biggest giveaway is the texture of the guard coat.

Are Malamutes hair long or short?

The Alaskan Malamute sports a dense double coat. The thick, coarse outer coat, known as the guard coat, should not be soft or long. The undercoat is one to two inches deep. It's oily and woolly to repel wetness and cold.

Are Malamutes Fluffy?

One of the most attractive things about the Alaskan Malamute is how cute and fluffy they can be. Unfortunately, if regular grooming isn't your thing, you may want to reconsider an Alaskan Malamute. According to the Alaskan Malamute Club of America (AMCA), the Malamute's thick, double coat requires daily brushing.

Why you should never shave a Malamute?

The act of shaving a Malamute or double-coated breed removes the dog's natural insulation and causes their system to kick into high gear. They'll now produce coat to protect themselves from extreme temperatures, sunburn and sharp objects.

What is the difference between a Malamute and a giant Malamute?

Either way, they are much larger than standard Malamutes, which only reach weights of up to 85 pounds. Giant Malamutes are typically in excess of 100 pounds and often reach up to 150 pounds. However, size is the only differing factor between the Giant and standard Malamutes, and they are identical in every other way.
