Roundworms do pose a significant risk to humans. Contact with contaminated soil or dog feces can result in human ingestion and infection. Roundworm eggs may accumulate in significant numbers in the soil where pets deposit feces. Once infected, the worms can cause eye, lung, heart and neurologic signs in people.
How easy is it to get roundworms from a dog?
Puppies can actually be born with them, and both puppies and kittens can become infected by drinking their mother's milk. When infected, pets can shed thousands upon thousands of microscopic roundworm eggs in their feces, which we can unknowingly ingest without realizing it.
How do I know if my dog gave me worms?
If they come into contact with skin, they are able to latch on and burrow into the new host. An itchy rash at the point of penetration is the most obvious of the symptoms of a hookworm infection. Winding red trails may also be visible as the worm eats a path for itself under the skin.
