Shar-Peis are intelligent dogs needing little training. Although they are somewhat aloof, snobbish and reserved in the presence of strangers, they are extremely loyal and devoted to their family. Essentially they are an independent, regal, alert and dignified animal with a calm and confident stature.
Is a Shar-Pei a good family dog?
As adults, the shar-pei dog breed fills out but never grows completely into their skin, retaining their signature wrinkles around the head, neck and shoulders. Intelligent, loyal and fiercely protective, shar-peis make good guardian dogs, but also possess a calm demeanor that makes them excellent family companions.

The Shar-Pei is active, quick-learning, and intelligent. They are one of the easier breeds to housebreak. However, the breed requires a firm, confident pet parent who can train in a consistent and rewarding manner. First time pet parents may find training a stubborn Shar-Pei a challenging feat!
Is Shar-Peis aggressive?
The Shar-Pei was once a guard dog and pit fighter. Today he is primarily a companion, though he retains fighting toughness. He can be aggressive toward other dogs or people, so it's imperative that he be socialized and trained from an early age. Due to his short nose, the Shar-Pei is prone to overheating.
Do Shar-Peis need a lot of attention?
Chinese Shar-Pei need only moderate exercise (several brisk daily walks), so they do quite well in the city or suburbs. In fact, unless they are securely fenced, they are not the best choice for a farm or rural setting, for they have strong hunting instincts and may run deer or molest livestock if they get loose.
