Whippets are mildly stubborn, but also very sensitive. They respond favorably only to calm, upbeat training methods that emphasize praise and food. Most sighthounds tend to be touch-sensitive, tending to startle a bit when touched unexpectedly or grabbed for a hug.
Are Whippets nervous dogs?
They can be a bit nervous without this socialisation which is why it's so important. Like most dogs, Whippets dislike being left alone and can suffer with separation anxiety. They form strong bonds with their owners and can get very stressed when left alone for any length of time.
Are Whippets timid?
When Whippets are not socialized properly they can become timid and stressed by changes in their environment. A properly socialized Whippet is a polite and undemanding dog who's wonderful with strangers and other dogs alike.
Are all Whippets anxious?
All dogs suffer separation anxiety if they're left alone at home for too long. In my experience, Whippets tend to be more susceptible to stress when their family is not at home than some other breeds. Adult Whippets can be left alone for a reasonable amount of time.
Are Whippets difficult to train?
Whippets are sighthounds, bred to hunt without commands from the hunter. While generally not stubborn, they're independent and not the easiest breed to train. Don't let that discourage you: They are very intelligent and all can learn house manners easily, like sit, down, and stay.
