You can usually stop closing your dog into your crate when they are around two years of age. Before then, they are usually more likely to get into trouble. It isn't until they mature fully that they are able to behave properly when not supervised. This is especially true for larger dogs, who tend to mature later.

How long is too long for crate training?
All dogs, even grown dogs, should be crated for no more than nine hours. Puppies still in house training may need more frequent breaks. Puppies younger than six months will need a potty break during the middle of the day. It is important to err on the side of caution when crating.
How do you phase out of crate training?
When leaving your dog outside of his crate for the first time, start in your room of choice and only leave for a couple of minutes. If he seems to be fine after a few tries, you can gradually increase the duration. Take a step back if your dog fails and try to determine what caused him to fail.
When should I stop using the crate during the day?
It is never acceptable to shut your dog in the crate all day while you go to work. Adult dogs that have been successfully trained to have a positive association with their crate and view it as there safe haven are normally quite happy to be left for about three hours.
