Botulism in cats can be life threatening, but if treatment is begun early enough most pets will make a full recovery. This can occur in as little as ten days from the onset of symptoms, but may take several weeks. During this time it is important your pet receives the supportive care they need.

What is the prognosis for botulism? Most affected cats recover within 14-24 days, if they receive appropriate supportive care. Without treatment, death due to paralysis of the diaphragm or secondary infection may occur.
Can botulism be reversed?
The antitoxin attaches itself to toxin that's still circulating in your bloodstream and keeps it from harming your nerves. The antitoxin cannot, however, reverse the damage that's been done. Fortunately, nerves do regenerate. Many people recover fully, but it may take months and extended rehabilitation therapy.
Can botulism poisoning be cured?
Doctors treat botulism with a drug called an antitoxin, which prevents the toxin from causing any more harm. Antitoxin does not heal the damage the toxin has already done. Depending on how severe your symptoms are, you may need to stay in the hospital for weeks or even months before you are well enough to go home.
Can botulism cause permanent damage?
The majority of botulism patients never fully recover their pre-illness health. After three months to a year of recovery, persisting side-effects are most likely permanent. These long-term effects most often include fatigue, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, and difficulty performing strenuous tasks.
