Can a dog survive neurological distemper?

Dogs may recover completely from the infection, but prompt, aggressive care is essential. Even with intensive care, some dogs do not make a satisfactory recovery. Unfortunately, treatment for the neurologic problems of distemper is usually not successful.

How do you treat neurological distemper?

There is no specific treatment for distemper infection. Sup- p ortive care is important for animals that are systemically ill. Anticonvulsant medications may be given for seizures, but the sei- zures can be difficult to control. (See also the handout on Canine Distemper Virus.)

Can distemper paralysis be cured?

There is no cure for canine distemper, but your vet can recommend supportive care and symptom treatment.

Can a dog fully recover from distemper?

It is entirely possible to recover from Canine Distemper Disease. Recovery is usually dependent upon the strength of the dog's immune system and the strain of distemper they have contracted. It can take up to 2 months to fully recover.
