Can a puppy have coccidia with no symptoms?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Coccidia infection can cause diarrhea, and can be fatal, especially in puppies. However, many dogs show no symptoms. Dogs get coccidia from swallowing infected soil or substances containing dog feces.

Can coccidia be asymptomatic?

Some cases of coccidia are asymptomatic, which means that the dog may not show any signs or symptoms but can still spread the disease, making them a “silent carrier.” Other infected dogs may show some or all of the above symptoms. Diarrhea is a common symptom in young or immunosuppressed dogs.

How long can a dog have coccidia before showing symptoms?

They lie in the environment and eventually sporulate (mature) into a more developed oocyst which can infect the dog again. Other dogs, cats, or mice may also become infected. This process can occur in as little as 6 hours, but it usually takes 7-10 days.

How long does it take for coccidia to show symptoms?

It takes about thirteen days for illness to develop after the kitten first ingests coccidia. Consequently, kittens that become sick from a coccidial infection are at least two weeks old.

Will coccidia in a puppy go away on its own?

Does coccidia ever go away? Coccidia will usually go away with treatment with ponazuril or Albon. There are times that coccidia infection can recur. Because coccidia organisms are very resistant, they can persist in the environment for long periods of time.
