How much water is too much for dogs?

Polydipsia (increased drinking) is defined as more than 100ml per kg per day. Some pets may have noticeably increased drinking, whilst still drinking less than this amount. More than 50ml/kg/24hrs may raise suspicion about polydipsia, whereas over 100ml/kg/24hrs is definitely polydipsia.

How do you know if your dog has too much water?

Symptoms of water intoxication in dogs include lack of coordination, lethargy, nausea, bloating, vomiting, dilated pupils, glazed eyes, light gum color, and excessive salivation. Advanced symptoms include difficulty breathing, collapsing, loss of consciousness, and seizures.

Can drinking too much water hurt a dog?

As important as it is to avoid dehydration, there can be too much of a good thing. Many owners — and even some veterinarians — are unaware that an overabundance of water in a dog's system can lead to frightening symptoms and even death.

Should I limit my dogs water?

Dogs do need water, so it typically isn't recommended to restrict their intake. This can cause dehydration and all sorts of issues along with that. At the same time, puppies may need to be taken out very late at night if they are drinking water.
