Should I separate my dogs if one has worms?
Roundworms are passed when the eggs of the worms are ingested by another dog, or in certain cases, absorbed through the skin. You must be careful to keep dogs that you suspect have worms away from healthy dogs for this reason, until they are treated.
Can dogs get worms from licking each other?
Parasites like hookworm, roundworm, and giardia can be passed from dog to human through licking. Salmonella, too, can be passed from your dog to you, or vice versa. Viruses tend to affect one species or the other; you're not going to give your dog a cold, and they won't be giving you their cough.
How are worms transmitted between dogs?
If dogs accidentally eat these eggs — by sniffing or licking the ground, or by eating dirt or grass — they can become infected. Your dog can contract hookworms by accidentally ingesting hookworm larvae found in the soil. They can also get hookworms through close skin contact with larvae left in soil or sand.
Can my older dog get worms from my puppy?
NO! People may think because dogs do pick up tapeworms after too much contact with an infected dog, that they can directly get tapeworm from other dogs. However, tapeworms need an intermediary host, like a flea! A flea ingests tapeworm eggs from an infected dog.
