If you give your dog fresh pumpkin, make sure he's not eating the pumpkin that you carved yesterday or last week. Carved pumpkins will start to decompose quickly and can become moldy… making your dog sick instead of healthy. It is safe for your dog to eat the insides of a fresh pumpkin… and remember in moderation!
Can dogs eat the stringy part of pumpkins?
If you've bought a pumpkin to carve for Halloween, you can keep the flesh and seeds that you scoop out for your dog. Just remove the stringy bits and the seeds before cooking the flesh. You can also peel, roast and grind the seeds and your pooch can enjoy those too.
Can my dog eat a whole pumpkin?
Dogs can eat pumpkin, but not all in all forms. For example, it's best to avoid raw pumpkin, pumpkin skin and the stem, as they're hard for your pup to digest. Canned and roasted pumpkin, however, are fine as long as there aren't added ingredients or spices, Dr. Bowens says.
Is the inside of a pumpkin good for dogs?
Both raw and cooked pumpkin is safe for dogs. (If your dog or cat has diabetes or chronic kidney disease, always ask your vet first.) As far as our healthy pooches go, seeds and flesh of fresh raw pumpkins are safe provided, of course, it's not a rotten pumpkin that's been sitting on the porch for four weeks.
