NO! People may believe because worms are usually harmless in humans, that they're probably not too dangerous in dogs either and that they can rid themselves of them, but this is not the case. Dogs cannot get rid of worms themselves.


How does a dog pass a tapeworm?

Dipylidium caninum, the most common tapeworm in dogs, is spread through an intermediate host: fleas. Infected dogs pass tapeworm segments in their feces, where they dry and eventually break open.

Can my dog give my other dog tapeworms?

NO! People may think because dogs do pick up tapeworms after too much contact with an infected dog, that they can directly get tapeworm from other dogs. However, tapeworms need an intermediary host, like a flea! A flea ingests tapeworm eggs from an infected dog.

Some people with tapeworm infections never need treatment, for the tapeworm exits the body on its own. Others don't realize they have it because they have no symptoms. However, if you're diagnosed with intestinal tapeworm infection, medication will likely be prescribed to get rid of it.

You may continue to see worms in your pup's poop for about a week. If they had a serious infestation, you may see worms for up to two weeks.
