Can roundworms be passed from dog to human?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Roundworms do pose a significant risk to humans. Contact with contaminated soil or dog feces can result in human ingestion and infection. Roundworm eggs may accumulate in significant numbers in the soil where pets deposit feces. Once infected, the worms can cause eye, lung, heart and neurologic signs in people.

Can you get roundworms from your dog licking you?

Parasites like hookworm, roundworm, and giardia can be passed from dog to human through licking. Salmonella, too, can be passed from your dog to you, or vice versa. Viruses tend to affect one species or the other; you're not going to give your dog a cold, and they won't be giving you their cough.

How easily are worms passed from dogs to humans?

In humans the juvenile heartworms never make it to the heart, but the inflammation caused by the worms can cause lung damage. It is impossible for the parasite to be spread directly from dogs to humans.

How easily can roundworms be transmitted to humans?

Yes. If you come into contact with infected poop of people or animals, you can get roundworms. You can also get them by touching infected surfaces, like soil.

How do I know if I got worms from my dog?

An itchy rash at the point of penetration is the most obvious of the symptoms of a hookworm infection. Winding red trails may also be visible as the worm eats a path for itself under the skin. Severe cases may cause diarrhea, and can lead to weight loss and anemia.
