How long can a dog live with whipworms?

The eggs are very resistant to drying and heat, so they can remain alive in the environment for up to 5 years. Once laid, they mature to an infective stage (a process known as embryonation) in the environment and are able to re-infect a new dog in 10-60 days.

Are whipworms fatal to dogs?

Dogs that are infected with a few whipworms may not have any signs of infection. More severe infections can cause bloody diarrhea. If an infected dog is not treated, then severe whipworm infection can cause serious disease and even death.

Do whipworms go away on their own?

Whipworm infections are generally treated for 1–3 days with medication prescribed by your health care provider. The drugs are effective and appear to have few side effects.

Are whipworms painful for dogs?
