Can a baby get worms from breastfeeding?

Infection in children is common and toddlers may infect their mothers who may be breastfeeding. Threadworms live for about 6 weeks in the gut, and then die. The female worms lay tiny eggs around the anus and these cause intense itching. Transfer of the ova back into the mouth perpetuates the infection.

How do you treat worms when breastfeeding?

There are two medications that are commonly used to treat worm infections and they are both available over the counter from a pharmacy. The generic names are Mebendazole and Pyrantel. Mebendazole is the first preference as studies in human pregnancy show no increase in adverse effects to the mother or fetus.

Can a breastfeeding mother Deworm herself?

Mebendazole use during lactation is considered to be safe due to a low oral absorption and unlikely excretion in milk.

What can be transmitted through breast milk?

Three viruses (CMV, HIV, and HTLV-I) frequently cause infection or disease as a result of breast-milk transmission. Reasonable guidelines have been pro-posed for when and how to avoid breast milk in the case of maternal infection.
