Parasites live in other host organisms and depend on them for survival. Without a host, a parasite cannot live, grow, and multiply. For this reason, a parasite rarely kills its host, but it can spread diseases, some of which may be fatal.


How long do worms live without a host?

Roundworm eggs are some of the longest surviving pathogens. These eggs are resistant to various environmental conditions and can survive for up to 1 to 3 years, waiting for a host where they will hatch and grow into worms. When they are shed from your pet's feces, they are not infective until after about a month.

Do worms need a host?

In contrast, worms don't require the activation of their host file. Once a worm has entered your system, usually via a network connection or as a downloaded file, it can then run, self-replicate and propagate without a triggering event.

Do worms need a host to survive?

Worms are animals so they are made of many cells and have many needs. By living in a larger animal host, they can get all of the nutrients they need from the host directly and eventually reproduce. Generally parasitic worms can't survive without a host because they've evolved to be dependent on their host.

Parasites that live outside the host are called ectoparasites (Figure 2A). For example, a flea is a parasite that lives on cats. In contrast, parasites that live inside their hosts are known as endoparasites (Figure 2B).
