Rabies can't go through unbroken skin. People can get rabies only via a bite from a rabid animal or possibly through scratches, abrasions, open wounds or mucous membranes in contact with saliva or brain tissue from a rabid animal.
Can you get rabies from a surface?
Rabies virus is transmitted through direct contact with infectious tissue or fluids. Rabies virus is not transmitted through contaminated objects or materials such as clothes or bedding.
Can you get rabies from touching something a rabid animal touched?
You cannot get rabies from the blood, urine, or feces of a rabid animal, or from just touching or petting an animal. How long does it take to show signs of rabies af- ter being exposed? The incubation period of rabies is more variable than with other infections.
Can rabies virus survive on surfaces?
It is destroyed within a few minutes at temperatures greater than 122°F, and survives no more than a few hours at room temperature. The virus is no longer infectious once the material containing the virus is dry.
Can you get rabies by touch?
