Malamutes don't relish being left alone, and will become destructive if you leave them for half a day or a full day. They can be alone for a few hours as long as they are well exercised beforehand.

The Alaskan Malamute has a strong pack instinct and, therefore, wants to be included as a part of the family and loves to be around you. She does not like being left alone for extended periods of time (no more than 3 or 4 hours).

Alaskan Malamute's are prone to separation anxiety and tend to display associated howling and chewing behaviour. They need constant mental and physical stimulation. Being strongly independent and highly intelligent also means that they are difficult to house-train. They are not for novice dog-owners.
Can Malamutes be off leash?
If your efforts at obedience training have been very successful, there is a chance that you may be able to trust your Mal off leash in secluded areas. Such dogs are the exception, though, and you should count on having to keep your Malamute safely under control at all times.
Do Alaskan Malamutes need a lot of attention?
Malamutes are patient with children and love the attention they get from them, but fast-growing, energetic Alaskan Malamute puppies can easily overpower a young child under age five. In their exuberance, they can knock a child over.
