The pinworms are white, can be seen with the naked eye (no magnification) and are about the length of a staple (about 8-13 mm for female and 2-5mm for male worms). The eggs that are laid by the female worms are not visible as they are about 55 micrometers in diameter and are translucent (see Figure 1).
What do pinworm egg look like?
They look like tiny pieces of white thread. You also might see them on your underwear when you wake up in the morning. But the pinworm eggs are too tiny to be seen without a microscope. The itching from the pinworms might wake you up in the middle of the night and make you squirm a lot.
Are pinworm eggs visible to the human eye?
The itchiness tends to be worse or more noticeable at night, and can sometimes wake a person with pinworms. A pinworm can lay thousands of microscopic eggs. Pinworm eggs are not visible to the naked eye.

Other sites of infection can occur and there can be enough worms to cause abdominal pain but these are both rare. How do we diagnose pinworms? Pinworms are formally diagnosed when the symptoms are present and the worm is seen - either around the anal area, on the outside of the stool or toilet paper.
How do I check myself for pinworms?
One way to detect pinworms is to shine a flashlight on the anal area. The worms are tiny, white, and threadlike. If none are seen, check for 2 or 3 additional nights. The best way to diagnose this infection is to do a tape test.
