Can you start a potato in water?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Growing in Water Growing potatoes in water requires you to suspend the potato cutting or seed in a container of water with at least one sprouting eye facing up. The submerged portion of the potato will absorb water and act as a nutrient source for the growing plant, eventually developing roots under the water as well.

Do potatoes sprout faster in water?

You can speed up the sprouting process slightly with increased moisture and warmth but putting them in standing water would lead to rot. We have had good success at layering potatoes in damp leaves and bringing them indoors to induce sprouting.

Can you grow a potato out of a potato?

All you need is a sunny space to grow them, a steady supply of water, and seed potatoes (the sprouted portion of a potato that you plant in the ground). So, yes, it's true: you can grow potatoes from potatoes!
