Do all dogs get worms?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Symptoms for intestinal worms are more obvious in puppies: They might vomit or have diarrhea, and may also have a pot-bellied appearance and a dull coat. However, almost all puppies are born with roundworms, so even those that appear healthy will usually have some worms inside them.

How common is it for dogs to get worms?

Worms in dogs and puppies are very common, and whilst they might be a concern to owners, they do not usually have serious consequences and are easy to treat.

How do you know if your dog has worms?

Infected dogs may pass segments of tapeworms in their stool. These may be visible and resemble little pieces of rice. Sometimes affected dogs may scoot their bottoms along the ground. If you see signs in your dog's stool or notice your dog scooting, take a stool sample to your veterinarian for diagnosis.

Are all dogs born with worms?

A: Not all puppies, but it is very common for puppies to have roundworms or hookworms, either passed in utero or through a mothers' milk. Because worm infection is so common, we normally deworm puppies just to be safe.
