Are human calories the same as dog calories?

A medium sized dog (around 17kg) needs around 1151 calories per day, depending on age. That's roughly half the intake of the average sized human. A traditional supermarket pork sausage contains 146 calories or 13% of a medium dog's daily requirement.

Are calories different for dogs?

There tends to be more variability in exercise and metabolism for dogs. An active hunting dog may burn off a couple thousand calories a day and a sled dog running the Iditarod can burn 3000 calories a day. As with cat foods, there are also big variations in calories per cup in dog foods.

Do dogs burn calories the same as humans?

Similar to humans, a dog's BMR usually makes up over half of the total calories that your dog burns every day. This is why you will see resting calories even if your pet does not have any active minutes yet.

Do calories matter for dogs?

Basically, a healthy, 10-pound dog with an average activity level will need roughly 350 calories a day to maintain his weight. This amount is only an estimate and should be based on the dog's needs - if he is overweight, he will need less calories. If he is a very active dog, he will need more.
