Are human calories the same as dog calories?
A medium sized dog (around 17kg) needs around 1151 calories per day, depending on age. That's roughly half the intake of the average sized human. A traditional supermarket pork sausage contains 146 calories or 13% of a medium dog's daily requirement.
Are calories different for dogs?
There tends to be more variability in exercise and metabolism for dogs. An active hunting dog may burn off a couple thousand calories a day and a sled dog running the Iditarod can burn 3000 calories a day. As with cat foods, there are also big variations in calories per cup in dog foods.
