NO! People may believe because worms are usually harmless in humans, that they're probably not too dangerous in dogs either and that they can rid themselves of them, but this is not the case. Dogs cannot get rid of worms themselves.
How do dogs randomly get worms?
Transmission of intestinal worms (hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms) commonly occurs when your dog ingests contaminated soil or feces containing eggs or immature worms (larvae) that have been passed from other infected animals in the environment.
How do I know if my dog is deworming?
Closely check the fur under your dog's tail and around his anus to see if there are tapeworm egg sacs or pale pink roundworms clinging to the fur and make an appointment to see the vet for proper treatment.
How often do dogs need to deworm?
How often should I treat my dog for worms? At least every three months. Depending on your pet's lifestyle, more regular worming may need to be undertaken and it is recommended this be discussed with your vet if you are concerned.
Does every dog need to be dewormed?
Currently, we recommend monthly deworming for all dogs in the summer months. If we have milder winters or if you have very young children, we may recommend deworming monthly all year round. There are several other types of parasitic worms as well (hookworms, whipworms). This is where the fecal test can be useful.
