Anxiety is a very common behavioural problem in both racing and retired greyhounds. Indeed it is very common across the canine spectrum, accounting for up to 90% of referrals to veterinary behaviourists.
Why are greyhounds so anxious?
Most problematic behaviours in greyhounds are invariably founded in fear, anxiety and the uncertainty of a novel environment. This is likely due in part to genetics, but mainly a lack of early and appropriate socialisation to the domestic environment. For many paddock raised, non-chasers, this includes people as well.
How do you calm a greyhound?
Remember it is undergoing stress adjusting to its new environment. Quiet and calm is the way to go. A light and gentle massage all over (paws and all) with soothing words is great for both the dog and the new owner. Your new greyhound may be very afraid the first few nights.
How do you tell if a greyhound is stressed?
Some of these signs might include: your greyhound begins to show signs of anxiety before you leave such as pacing, drooling, hypervigilance, trembling, or following you around constantly; remember though, many greyhounds will follow their person around the house without being anxious – they just want to be involved.
