Do heartworm positive dogs need to be isolated?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Yes, it is recommended in the American Heartworm Society's Guidelines to do so. This should be done under the direct supervision of a veterinarian because dogs with microfilaria (baby worms in the blood that the mosquito picks up when feeding) could possibly have a reaction to the preventive.

Can a dog with heartworms be around other dogs?

Heartworm disease is not contagious, meaning that a dog cannot catch the disease from being near an infected dog.

Can my dog walk around the house during heartworm treatment?

Most dogs can be safely leash-walked during the treatment recovery period and providing appropriate chew toys can help relieve some of that stored up physical energy.

Can heartworm positive dogs be active?

Your veterinarian should retest your dog for heartworm disease in 6 months. Usually, your dog can slowly resume activity at this time. Remember that every dog living in an area where heartworms exist needs to receive regular heartworm preventative (usually once monthly, given orally at home).

When can a dog resume normal activity after heartworm treatment?

Positively NO Strenuous Exercise for 8 weeks! The heartworms will die over the next 6 weeks. As they die and are broken down, pieces of them could lodge in other parts of the body's blood vessels, causing unnecessary complications–if your pet's activity is too strenuous.
