Once retinal development is completed, usually around 7 weeks of age, signs will first appear. Affected pups become almost blind in daylight and afraid of light because exposure to bright light appears irritating and possibly even painful, and as a result will shy away from brightly-lit areas.

Long coated malamutes require brushing every week, as well as good grooming (we recommend professional grooming for long coats every 6 weeks) about every 6-8 weeks If you do not follow this protocol for the long coats, you stand a very good chance of a very matted malamute that only shaving can remedy.
