Do nematodes infect plants?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Plant parasitic nematodes may attack the roots, stem, foliage and flowers of plants. All plant parasitic nematodes have piercing mouthparts called stylets. The presence of a stylet is the key diagnostic sign differentiating plant parasitic nematodes from all other types of nematodes. 1 февр. 2017 г.

How do nematodes affect plants?

Many plant-parasitic nematodes feed on the roots of plants. The feeding process damages the plant's root system and reduces the plant's ability to absorb water and nutrients. Typical nematode damage symptoms are a reduction of root mass, a distortion of root structure and/or enlargement of the roots (Figure 6, 7, 8).

Do nematodes cause disease in plants?

Most plant parasitic nematodes are root feeders and live in the soil. The damage caused to the above-ground plant is general in nature and related to root damage. Nutrient deficiency, wilt, stunting, yield depression and sometimes plant death can result.

Do nematodes stay inside the plant they infect?

Ectoparasitic nematodes feed on plant tissues from outside the plant; endoparasitic nematodes feed inside the tissues. If the adult female moves freely through the 61 soil or plant tissues, the species is said to be Amigratory.

How do you know if your plant has nematodes?

Symptoms that your plants may exhibit if they are suffering from a root-knot nematode infestation include wilting, chlorosis, yellowing, stunted growth, and even death of the plant.
