Today, the breed is still held in high regard throughout the Middle East and were hunting dogs for nobles and rulers around the region. Although Muslims traditionally regarded dogs as unclean, they made an exception for the Saluki to live in the family tent.


Are Salukis still around?

The tribesmen equal attention to the breeding of their Salukis as they did to their Arabian horses, prizing speed, endurance, and a keen hunting instinct. Salukis are still used for hunting today in the Middle East.

Are Salukis extinct?

Their progeny did very well in shows. As with so many breeds, the Saluki had suffered during World War II, and many were lost to bombings, starvation, and euthanasia, but committed owners and breeders saved the breed from extinction and we're able to admire this breed today.

Are Saluki dogs rare?

The Saluki Club of America was founded in 1927, the same year the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club. The first Saluki registered by the AKC was Jinniyat of Grevel in 1929. Today the Saluki is a rare treasure, ranking 116th among the 155 breeds and varieties recognized by the AKC.

Are Salukis the oldest dog breed?

The Saluki, royal dog of Egypt, is perhaps the oldest known breed of domesticated dog, identified by some historians as "a distinct breed and type as long ago as 329 BC when Alexander the Great invaded India." The Saluki was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1927.
