You may find tapeworm segments stuck to the fur under your pet's tail, or on whatever surface your pet has slept on. The segments are small and white and resemble a grain of rice, except they may wiggle and move on their own, much unlike a grain of rice.
Can you see tapeworms moving?
Tapeworm infection is usually diagnosed when the moving segments are seen crawling around the anus or in a bowel movement. Dipylidium tapeworm eggs are rarely released into the feces and are therefore not usually detected by routine fecal exams performed by your veterinarian.
Do tapeworm segments move independently?
While the tapes worms live inside your pet's intestines, they feed off the food your pet eats and digests, and then make their way along the natural path that follows. Tape worms have the signature characteristic breaking off segments of the main worm, which creates small “mini” worms that move independently.
What do tapeworm fragments look like?
Most tapeworms are seen as segments (which are individual egg packets) either stuck around the anus or crawling out of a fresh stool. When dried up, they look like small rice grains. Before they dry out, they look like small white balls of jelly that inch along.
Do tapeworms move inside?
If you ingest certain tapeworm eggs, they can migrate outside your intestines and form larval cysts in body tissues and organs (invasive infection). If you ingest tapeworm larvae, however, they develop into adult tapeworms in your intestines (intestinal infection).
