Do you have to wait for potatoes to flower before harvesting?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

ANSWER: Don't worry if your potato plants aren't producing blooms. The flowers are not needed in order for the plants to grow delicious tubers underground. Instead, the blossoms are linked to production of the small, green above-ground fruits that resemble tomatoes.

How do I know when my potatoes are ready for harvesting?

Let the potato plants and the weather tell you when to harvest them. Wait until the tops of the vines have completely died before you begin harvesting. When the vines are dead, it is a sure sign the potatoes have finished growing and are ready to be harvested.

How long after planting potatoes do they flower?

Generally, you will start to see flowers 55 to 60 days after planting a seed potato in the ground. This gives the plant just enough time to flower and fruit before going dormant for the season. The potato blossoms are only around for a short period of time while they wait to be pollinated.

Are potatoes done when they flower?

Flowering just means that the vines are mature enough and have enough leaf area to start forming tubers. It doesn't mean the tubers are ready to harvest. Until they reach mature size, your potatoes should be watered regularly though the summer, from 1 to 3 inches of water per week, as needed.

Should you let potato plants flower?

Should I Let My Potato Plants Flower? You can let your potato plants flower – a flowering potato plant is nothing to worry about. There is nothing wrong with a flowering potato plant – it is just trying to reproduce. A potato plant produces flowers to reproduce – but it can also use tubers to make new plants.
