Do you have to wrap a potato in the microwave?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

A: A special plastic wrap is used that it breathes out, which allows some of the moisture to escape when baked in the microwave oven. Microwave bags for other vegetables would probably work fine, too. Trapping the moisture in just steams the potatoes, but some people prefer it this way.

Do potatoes have to be wrapped in foil?

Prick potatoes with a fork before baking to shorten the baking time and to keep them from bursting. Bake at 400° F for about one hour, or until tender. Do not wrap potatoes in aluminum foil for baking. Foil holds in moisture and steams the potatoes, resulting in a "boiled" taste and texture.

How do you microwave a potato without it exploding?

Place both halves flat side down on a microwave usable dish. If using paper plates, use more than one; otherwise the plate(s) might break through from the moisture when removing from the microwave. Slicing the potato in half obviously reduces the explosion risk, but putting a couple more holes in each half won't hurt.
