Does leptospirosis go away on its own in dogs?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

The signs of leptospirosis in dogs vary. Some infected dogs do not show any signs of illness, some have a mild and transient illness and recover spontaneously, while others develop severe illness and death.

Can a dog survive leptospirosis without treatment?

If untreated, leptospirosis is fatal. Dogs typically come into contact with the Leptospira bacteria in infected water or soil, or from coming into contact with urine from an infected animal, wild or domestic. Leptospira cannot replicate outside of the body, but can remain viable in soil for weeks to months.

Will lepto go away on its own?

The 100 to 150 infections reported every year in the United States occur mainly in the late summer and early fall. Because mild leptospirosis typically causes vague, flu-like symptoms that go away on their own, many infections are probably unreported.

What happens if leptospirosis is left untreated?

Without treatment, Leptospirosis can lead to kidney damage, meningitis (inflammation of the membrane around the brain and spinal cord), liver failure, respiratory distress, and even death.

How do you get rid of leptospirosis in dogs?

Leptospirosis is treatable with antibiotics. If an animal is treated early, it may recover more rapidly and any organ damage may be less severe. Other treatment methods, such as dialysis and hydration therapy may be required.
