Why does my vet want a stool sample?
Stool samples are used to test your pet for intestinal parasites which may be harmful to your pet and in some cases may be contagious to humans. By bringing an adequate, fresh sample you will allow us to run a fecal test by flotation to detect parasites and assure you of your pet's health.
How old does a vet have to be to get a stool sample?
Ideally, the stool sample should be no more than 24 hours old and should be as free as possible of grass, gravel, kitty litter, etc. Your veterinarian may provide a container to collect the sample, but any clean, dry container with a tightly fitting lid can be used, such as a jar or plastic tub.
How do vets collect stool samples?
A fecal loop is a small plastic wand with a small loop on the end. After applying lubricant, your veterinarian can gently insert the loop into your pet's rectum and collect a sample of fecal material.
Is stool sample necessary?
The most common reason to test stool is to determine whether a type of bacteria or parasite may be infecting the intestines. Many microscopic organisms living in the intestines are necessary for normal digestion.
