How are lung worms transmitted?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

A susceptible animal may pick up an infection directly from an infected animal through saliva or nasal secretions. They may also become infected through food or water that has been contaminated by infectious forms of the parasite.

What causes lung worms in humans?

You can get angiostrongyliasis by eating food contaminated by the larval stage of A. cantonensis worms. In Hawaii, these larval worms can be found in raw or undercooked snails or slugs. Sometimes people can become infected by eating raw produce that contains a small infected snail or slug, or part of one.

How does a dog catch lungworm?

How do dogs get lungworm? Unlike many diseases, lungworm is not actually passed directly from dog to dog. The worm needs slug and snail hosts in order to grow and develop, and it's from eating these that infection may occur. Dogs then pass larvae in their waste, which in turn infect slugs and snails.
