Home-canned and store-bought food might be contaminated with toxin or other harmful germs if: the container is leaking, bulging, or swollen; the container looks damaged, cracked, or abnormal; the container spurts liquid or foam when opened; or. the food is discolored, moldy, or smells bad.

You cannot see, smell, or taste botulinum toxin – but taking even a small taste of food containing this toxin can be deadly.

How long does it take canned food to get botulism?

Foodborne botulism symptoms usually appear within 18 to 36 hours of eating food with the bacterium, though they could show up in as little as 6 hours. In some cases, symptoms of botulism don't occur for a week to 10 days after exposure.

How common is botulism in store bought canned food?

Cases of foodborne botulism in the U.S. are rare, typically numbering between 10 and 30 each year. Some botulism cases originate from people canning and preserving their own foods. Cracks or leaks in a food container will allow harmful bacteria to grow inside the food.

Can you cook botulism out of canned food?

When possible, heating canned food to a temperature of 85°C (185°F) for a minimum of five minutes before immediate consumption can reduce the risk of illness.”
