【Expert answer】
Any Q

Recorded human poisonings Between 1865 and 1983, there were around 2000 human cases of solanine poisoning, with most recovering fully and 30 deaths. Because the symptoms are similar to those of food poisoning, it is possible that there are many undiagnosed cases of solanine toxicity.

Is solanine poisoning rare?

Not to worry though, fatal cases of solanine poisoning are very rare these days. Most commercial varieties of potatoes are screened for solanine, but any potato will build up the toxin to dangerous levels if exposed to light or stored improperly.

How many green potatoes make you sick?

Solanine is considered a neurotoxin, and ingestion by humans can cause nausea and headaches and can lead to serious neurological problems and even death if enough is consumed. A recent study suggested that a 16-oz (450-gram) fully green potato is enough to make a small adult ill.

How much solanine is toxic to humans?

It is suggested that doses of 200–400 mg for adult humans can cause toxic symptoms (20–40 mg for children). Most commercial potatoes have a solanine content of less than 0.2 mg g−1. However, potatoes that have been exposed to light and have started to turn green can show higher concentrations.

How long does it take to recover from solanine poisoning?

The faster you get medical help, the better the chance for recovery. Symptoms may last for 1 to 3 days, and hospitalization may be necessary. Death has been reported, but is rare. DO NOT touch or eat any plant with which you are not familiar.
