Can tapeworms be transmitted from one dog to another?

NO! People may think because dogs do pick up tapeworms after too much contact with an infected dog, that they can directly get tapeworm from other dogs. However, tapeworms need an intermediary host, like a flea! A flea ingests tapeworm eggs from an infected dog.

How are tapeworms transmitted in dogs?

How did my pet get the Dipylidium tapeworm? By swallowing a flea infected with a tapeworm larvae. A dog or cat may swallow a flea while self-grooming. Once the flea is digested by the dog or cat, the larval tapeworm is able to develop into an adult tapeworm.

Should I quarantine my dog with tapeworms?

Generally speaking, dogs affected by intestinal parasites like roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms don't have to be quarantined. Intestinal parasites don't really spread via close contact.
