Leptospirosis, also known as “lepto”, is a highly contagious bacterial infection that affects most species of mammals, including dogs. Leptospirosis is zoonotic (which means it can be passed along to humans).

After starting treatment, your dog may continue to pass leptospirosis bacteria for six weeks. During that time, protect yourself and others: Wash your hands carefully after direct contact with your dog or its urine.
How is leptospirosis transmitted from dog to dog?
Most dogs are infected by direct contact with urine from an infected animal. Others are infected by contact with water or soil contaminated with infected urine. Leptospira can penetrate the soft lining of the nose, mouth, and eyelid, and can enter the body through open sores and scratches in the skin.
Can a dog catch lepto from another dog?
The Leptospira spirochete bacteria is zoonotic, meaning that it can be transmitted to humans and other animals from an infected animal. Children are most at risk of acquiring the bacteria from an infected pet. People and pets can be infected and not yet show symptoms.
Can a dog survive leptospirosis?
Leptospirosis is responsive to antibiotics and complete recovery is possible, but some dogs that survive may be left with chronic kidney or liver disease. Some dogs may not survive if the infection has caused significant organ damage or severely affected the ability of blood to form clots.
