How do birds get coccidiosis?

【Expert answer】
Any Q

Coccidia are spread through the feces of infected birds. If feces are in the bedding, they're on the birds' feathers. And if feces are on the feathers, the birds will ingest them while preening (using their beaks to clean themselves).

Can humans get coccidiosis from birds?

Humans may first encounter coccidia when they acquire a dog, cat or bird that is infected. Other than T. gondii, the infectious organisms are canine and feline-specific and are not contagious to humans, unlike the zoonotic diseases.

How is coccidiosis contracted?

Transmission: Coccidiosis is transmitted from animal to animal by the fecal–oral route. Infected fecal material can contaminate feed, water or soil; therefore, cattle can contract the disease by eating and drinking from contaminated sources, or by licking itself or other animals.

What are the signs of coccidiosis?

Outward signs of coccidiosis in chickens include droopiness and listlessness, loss of appetite, loss of yellow color in shanks, pale combs and wattles, ruffled, unthrifty feathers, huddling or acting chilled, blood or mucus in the feces, diarrhea, dehydration, and even death.

How can coccidiosis be prevented?

Cleanliness is the first course of action to take in the prevention of coccidiosis as oocytes are spread in feces. A clean barn is essential especially before lambing or kidding. Keep pens dry by using adequate bedding, prevent contamination of feed and water and do not feed animals on the ground.
