What are the clinical signs of food allergies in dogs? In the dog, the signs of a food allergy are usually itchy skin, paws, or ears or digestive disturbances such as vomiting or diarrhea. Other more subtle changes can also occur, including hyperactivity, weight loss, lack of energy, and even aggression.

How long does it take for a dog to react to a food allergy?

In more severe cases, your dog may have an immediate reaction, breaking out in hives, swelling, and vomiting shortly after ingesting the allergen. In many cases, however, it can take several minutes or hours, or as many as 14 days for your dog to start presenting symptoms.

Can a dog all of a sudden become allergic to their food?

They have to be sensitized; they have to have been exposed for some period of time. So, in general, they're not going to react really dramatically the first time they eat it but a dog that has eaten a food for years could suddenly become allergic to that food.

How do I figure out what my dog is allergic to?

A RAST test, or radioallergosorbent test, is a blood test that can be used to determine whether a dog is allergic to certain antigens. This test is often performed as part of the workup for atopy (a skin manifestation of inhalant allergy) in dogs.
