Infected dogs can pass hundreds of microscopic eggs in their stool, where they hatch and can remain alive in soil for as long as several months. A dog may eat the infected dirt or lick it from the bottom of its paws, or sniff infected dog feces. Humans can also become infected with hookworms.

How do dogs get infected with worms?

Roundworms are intestinal parasites that infect your dog's intestinal tract by infection from their mother's milk, contact with or digestion of larvae (baby roundworms) in a contaminated environment, or by eating an infected animal, like a bug or rodent.

When you worm a dog do the worms come out dead?

Paralyzed worms pass through the intestinal tract and are passed out in your puppy's poop. This is why you will notice that your puppy poops worms after deworming. This may continue for three days or even longer. Be careful to dispose of your dog's excrement properly to get rid of any worm eggs and larvae.

How does a dog get worms in their poop?

Dogs can become infected with tapeworms if they accidentally ingest a flea that contains tapeworm larvae. Worms are obligate parasites that get all of their nutrition from their host. Dogs who are smaller, younger and/or have a compromised immune system may be more prone to developing worms in their poop than others.
