Treatment regimes usually involve high, repetitive doses of anthelmintics, along with steroids, and other supportive therapies. Many different anthelmintics (levamisol, ivermectin, albendazole, fenbendazole, thiabendazole) have been used to treat meningeal worm infection (8).
What causes meningeal worm?
Meningeal worm is caused by the roundworm (nematode)Parelaphostrongylus tenuis. The intermediate host is one of several species of snail or slug. Animals become infected when they ingest infected snails or slugs, likely by accident.
Can brain worm be treated?
The infection is treated with albendazole or praziquantel (drugs used to treat parasitic worm infections, called antihelminthic drugs). However, if a person has many cysts, antihelminthic drugs may kill many organisms, causing the brain to swell significantly.
How do you prevent meningeal worms?
This parasite is very difficult to control once a goat has become infected, therefore it is important to prevent infection. Because snails and slugs live in a wet environment, you can help prevent the infection by keeping goats away from wet areas in pastures during late summer and early fall.
How do goats get meningeal worms?
As the snails that carry meningeal enjoy wet conditions, prevent goats from accessing swampy areas, ponds, or other wet terrains. Alternately, fence these areas off from the deer that spread the parasite.
