Stool tests To diagnose ascariasis, your doctor will examine your stool for the tiny (microscopic) eggs and larvae. But eggs won't appear in stool until at least 40 days after you're infected. And if you're infected with only male worms, you won't have eggs.

Health care providers can diagnose ascariasis by taking a stool sample and using a microscope to look for the presence of eggs. Some people notice infection when a worm is passed in their stool or is coughed up. If this happens, bring in the worm specimen to your health care provider for diagnosis.
What are the signs of worm infestation?
Additionally, each worm infection has the following distinct signs and symptoms: Pinworm infection: Rash or itching around the rectum or anus and disturbed sleep due to itching and/or painful urination. Roundworm infection: Diarrhea, passing worms with stools, dry cough, fever.
