The earliest that the heartworm proteins can be detected in a dog's bloodstream is about 5 months after it is bitten by an infected mosquito. Another test detects microfilariae in a dog's bloodstream. 22 авг. 2019 г.

How long does it take for heartworms to show up on a test?

Antigen is detectable by 6½ to 7 months after infection and positive results may be obtained with as few as 1 to 3 adult females in the heart. Antigen tests will be falsely negative if: the infection has been present for less than 5 months (dog is infected, but it is too soon for adults so there is no antigen present).

How long does it take for heartworms to develop in a dog?

Once inside a new host, it takes approximately 6 months for the larvae to develop into sexually mature adult heartworms. Once mature, heartworms can live for 5 to 7 years in dogs and up to 2 or 3 years in cats.

How long is heartworm undetected?

Dogs are typically heartworm tested prior to transport, but due to the life cycle of the heartworm, there is a window where dogs may test negative but still have heartworms. Heartworm in these dogs may go undetected for several months or more, allowing them to serve as a source of infection for other dogs.

How soon after heartworm treatment will a dog test negative?

While 100% of adult worms might be dead at the 6-month point, residual heartworm antigen in circulation is detectable for a time and could lead to an invalid test result. Waiting an additional 3 months allows time for the antigen to be cleared from the dog.
