Coccidia is a protozoa passed through the stool. An infected canine will eliminate the faeces containing the organism into the environment, where it can survive for up to one year.
What is the lifespan of coccidia?
Depending on the Eimeria species, the coccidian lifecycle takes approximately five to eight days to complete. Unsporulated oocysts are shed in the feces in the litter. Oocysts sporulate (become infective) in the presence of adequate moisture, oxygen and temperature.
Does coccidia ever go away?
Coccidia will usually go away with treatment with ponazuril or Albon. There are times that coccidia infection can recur. Because coccidia organisms are very resistant, they can persist in the environment for long periods of time.
How do you disinfect coccidia?
Clean water should be provided at all times. Most disinfectants do not work well against coccidia; incineration of the feces, and steam cleaning, immersion in boiling water or a 10% ammonia solution are the best methods to kill coccidia. Coccidia can withstand freezing.
Does coccidia stay in the ground?
Spores of the coccidia parasite are hardy and can survive in a number of locations. Normally they are passed from one animal to another by ingestion of infected fecal matter. They can also be transmitted via food, water and soil. Animals grazing in moist, shady areas are likely to pick the parasite up from the soil.
