Coccidia is a protozoa passed through the stool. An infected canine will eliminate the faeces containing the organism into the environment, where it can survive for up to one year.
What kills coccidia on surfaces?
Most disinfectants do not work well against coccidia; incineration of the feces, and steam cleaning, immersion in boiling water or a 10% ammonia solution are the best methods to kill coccidia. Coccidia can withstand freezing.
What is the lifespan of coccidia?
Depending on the Eimeria species, the coccidian lifecycle takes approximately five to eight days to complete. Unsporulated oocysts are shed in the feces in the litter. Oocysts sporulate (become infective) in the presence of adequate moisture, oxygen and temperature.
Does bleach kill coccidia on surfaces?
The ONLY OTHER WAY to kill coccidia is to use a 10% ammonia solution (Bleach will NOT kill it) - but ammonia can not be used when the dogs are present - this is important you must move the pup elsewhere while cleaning. Coccidia is not transmittable between species, each species has there own form of coccidia.
Does coccidia ever go away?
Coccidia will usually go away with treatment with ponazuril or Albon. There are times that coccidia infection can recur. Because coccidia organisms are very resistant, they can persist in the environment for long periods of time.
