Typically, a population of composting worms doubles every three to six months. Under ideal conditions as few as eight worms can become 1,500 worms in only six months, according to the Texas A&M University AgriLife Extension.


Do earthworms multiply quickly?

Young worms grow rapidly and are ready to reproduce in about one month. Depending on growing conditions, worms may take up to six months to attain full size. An actively growing worm bed will yield 4-5 pounds of worms per square foot of bed space per year.

Do worms multiply slowly?

Viruses, bacteria, and fungi multiply very quickly, while worms multiply very slowly in comparison. Taxonomically, all bacteria are closely related to each other than to viruses and vice versa.
