Currently available vaccines effectively prevent leptospirosis and protect dogs for at least 12 months. Annual vaccination is recommended for at-risk dogs.

How long is a leptospirosis shot good for?

Annual revaccination is recommended for dogs at sustained risk of exposure to the leptospirosis disease-causing organism. Dogs at exceptionally high risk should be vaccinated every six to nine months throughout the period of their continued high risk of exposure.

Does my dog need lepto vaccine every year?

The good news is that dogs can be protected against leptospirosis with an annual lepto vaccine for dogs. Since all dogs are at risk, and leptospirosis in dogs is also a human health risk, I recommend that all dogs receive the vaccine (unless a dog has adverse reactions to vaccines).

Leptospira bacteria can survive and thrive for up to 180 days given the right conditions; namely, warm, damp environments and stagnant water. That said, leptospira do need moist soils to survive, and they will rapidly die on dry surfaces.
